This is a highly relevant, industrially based training course that will update the skills and knowledge of Technicians and Engineers alike. The training course is ‘hands-on’ using industry standard PLC’s in a simulated environment. Through this approach the delegate will progress from learning the fundamentals of PLC application to writing, debugging and finally designing their own programs. Radio and wire based telemetry systems, essential for an understanding of modern communication methods deployed in the field are also studied and explained. These are vital for a comprehensive understanding in their use with not only programmable controllers but any Instrumentation/Controller remote application.

The training course also includes a study of modern SCADA technologies. Again, together with a hands-on approach using a modern industrially compliant SCADA software package, the delegate will acquire new and updated skills essential in any fast moving industrial environment.

TRAINING METHODOLOGY

The training seminar is delivered via a series of mixed activities that will at times involve delegate participation. Theoretical content is delivered by informal lecture and discussion and supplemented where appropriate with tutorial sessions using worked examples. An important part of the training course is the hands-on aspect. Using industry-compliant software and PLCs, approximately a third of the total time will be devoted to practical activities. Delegates will acquire the skills and confidence to investigate, debug and where necessary modify and/or design their own control systems employing a PLC

This Workshop explains typical switchgear maintenance, configurations and arrangements, typical problems encountered in the field and means of extending the life of HV/MV switchgear. The course also highlights training, safety considerations and provides practical guidance for operation, condition monitoring, maintenance and testing of HV/MV switchgear.

Switchgear, like many other types of industrial equipment, is often unnoticed and neglected until it fails to function normally. The level to which switchgear is maintained in industry varies significantly.

  • Maintenance levels at one extreme might involve ‘Condition Monitoring’ (Continuous Monitoring) of equipmentwith linear or rotating transducers.
  • At the other end of the spectrum, maintenance might only involve doing Periodic Maintenance Tasks (PMT), Inspections or even Major Maintenance Task (MOT).
  • One can also run equipment until it breaks down or even self destructs.
  • The vast majority of appropriate switchgear maintenance programs will fall somewhere in between these extremes.

This course aims to introduce candidates to the correct methods involved in the preparation of high voltage polymeric cables prior to splicing or terminating the cables. The understanding of how to correctly strip and prepare a cable will enable the candidate to install almost any type of joint or termination by any manufacturer.

Switchgear (and circuit breakers) and transformers are critical components in electrical distribution systems and their operation significantly affects the overall performance of the system. This course will discuss the application, installation, maintenance and testing issues relating to medium and high voltage switchgear, circuit breakers and transformers. Low voltage switchgear will also be covered and you will receive a thorough grounding in switchgear theory and standards. Y ou will gain a solid understanding of the issues associated with the proper application, installation and maintenance of these critical items of equipment with an overriding emphasis on safety. The emphasis is on medium voltage (referred today as high voltage) switchgear which represents most of the switchgear installed on electrical distribution systems. The focus is on air blast, oil, SF6 and vacuum circuit breakers. Case studies covering the main manufacturers’ equipment will illustrate the important practical principles. Other power system protection components will be discussed as well to ensure that switchgear is understood in the correct context.

This course explains the need for the development of engineering drawings as part of the problem solving for the engineers and their relevance to the various departments of an engineering organization. It also explains the various steps involved in the development of drawings; their release and control with reference to the accepted standards. The course explains the various components of a drawing, the common information recorded on drawing and some simple rules pertaining to creation of engineering drawings. It also explains the procedures for planning the layout of a drawing and the concepts of scales, grid referencing and revision marking for drawings. The necessity of development of worldwide standards for drawing symbols, the necessity of development of company specific standards, the requirement of non-standard symbols by drawing offices, the purpose and applications of electrical line diagrams, the conventions and symbols used in line diagrams and provides examples and practical lessons for reading and interpretation of single line diagrams will be explained.
